ABOUT ME

Patricia Magdalena Stieren Hernandez Redlin - that's me, if I use all my names. "Stieren Hernandez" are my last names prior to marriage. My father was an American of German-Irish descent. My mother was a Mexican.

I am an American-Mexican: "La Gringa Apestosa" - "The Stinky Gringa." This was the nickname given to me by my Mexican cousins when I lived in Mexico with them and attended a year of high school. I didn't actually stink - it was just a way to describe my general American teenager relaxed views on sophistication and elegance. In other words, my complete lack of those characteristics.

My day job is translation and editing: from Spanish, German, French, Italian and Portuguese into English. I work on translations of documents in the subject areas of business, marketing, finance, legal, medical/healthcare, personal documents, websites, reports, fiction, travel literature, etc.

Besides all the regular translations I do, I have also translated a travel and fishing guidebook focused on New Zealand from German into English, a book on the genealogy and family history of a German family from the 1600s to present day from German into English, and a historical fiction novel from Italian into English.

I was born in Illinois and mostly lived there until I was 23, but also spent many summers and an entire year living in Mexico. I have also lived in France, Germany, Arizona, Colorado, California, Upstate New York, and (currently) Washington State.

I have a BA in French Language and Literature and an MBA-IM ("IM" stands for "International Management"). In college and grad school, in addition to continuing studies in Spanish and French, I also studied German and Italian.

I have worked in general advertising and marketing, international airline reservations and ticketing, sales promotion, marketing, sales analysis, airport customer service/supervision, university program management, medical office management and medical report transcription, television station promotion and marketing, and language services project and vendor management - prior to becoming a full-time translator/editor in 2011. I spent most of my "pre-translator" career working in the USA, but also worked for four years in Germany.

I write fiction when I have a free minute or two. See the info regarding my collection of short stories (in the Books page of this website) and about my memoir (in the Books and Blogs pages).

I am the wife of a retired US Air Force Master Sergeant, who now works to help "Bring good things to life," and the mother of two sons. The older one would have turned 28 years old on June 30, 2020, but he died (of hopelessness about a life that derailed because of his mental illness) on February 11, 2020. Our younger son is 26 years old and doing well.
